UKLongtrack Training Weekend

January 17 @ 8:00 AM January 18 @ 5:00 PM

60.00

Q: I’ve never done long-track before. Is this weekend suitable for me?

A: Yes — but please note that UKLongtrack asks that all attendees are already able to perform basic skating skills (skating forwards, stopping, and crossovers). This ensures you can fully take advantage of the training. Many participants come from short-track, figure skating, or recreational skating backgrounds. The coaching will introduce you to long-track technique and how to skate safely on a 400 m oval.

Q: Do I need my own skates and kit?

A: Long-track skating typically uses “clap skates,” designed for efficient, powerful strides on an oval track. Long-track skate hire is available from the rink shop and can be arranged through UKLongtrack.
Tight-fitting clothing helps reduce drag, but it’s important to bring warm, suitable layers — De Uithof is a semi-roofed rink and can be quite cold.
Unlike short-track, helmets and heavy padding are generally not required, although helmets are becoming more common each year. Gloves, however, are mandatory.

Q: What do I need to know about the weekend schedule and logistics?

A: UKLongtrack training weekends typically run from early Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. You’ll take part in multiple on-ice sessions, coaching, and technique drills.
Since there are no long-track ovals in the UK, the event takes place abroad, so you will need to arrange your own travel and accommodation. UKLongtrack can offer suggestions and help connect participants who may wish to share travel or accommodation.

Q: What are the costs and what does it include?

A: The weekend costs £60, which includes ice time and coaching.
Please note that this fee does not cover travel, accommodation, equipment, or personal expenses.

Q: What level of fitness or skating ability do I need?

A: You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you should be comfortable on the ice. Long-track emphasises smooth, extended strides, endurance, and balance, so basic skating confidence is important. If you have recreational skating experience or come from short-track or figure skating, you’ll be well placed to enjoy the weekend.

Q: What happens if I want to continue after the weekend?

A: UKLongtrack aims to build a community of UK long-track skaters. After the weekend, you’ll be invited to future training events and have opportunities to connect with other skaters and coaches. As you progress, you may also choose to pursue longer-term training or even competition within the long-track programme.
